No auspicious occasion in Hindu culture is complete without the blessings of Lord Ganesha, God of success and prosperity. His reverence in India is supreme and this is why one day of each Hindu month is entirely dedicated to worshipping Ganpati. This day is observed as Sankashti Chaturthi. Also known as Sakat Chauth, the religious importance of this day increases manifold if it falls on either a Tuesday or Friday. This Hindu festival is observed every month on Chaturthi Tithi (fourth day) of Krishna Paksha.
Importance Of Sankashti Chaturthi
‘Sankashti’ is a Sanskrit term which means getting free from all the problems and troubles in life. So, those who pray devotedly to Lord Ganesha on this day are blessed with success, happiness and prosperity. As per the legend, it was on this day that Lord Shiva proclaimed that Lord Ganesha will always be the first to be worshipped before any important event or occasion. This is why this festival holds such relevance in Hindu Religion.
Sankashti Chaturthi that falls on a Tuesday is also known as Angaraki Chaturthi.
Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat
Sankashti Chaturthi Fasting Procedure is stringent and requires utmost devotion. Devotees who keep a fast on this day only eat fruits, sabudana khichdi and peanuts. This fast can be broken only after Lord Ganesha’s puja.
Sankashti Chaturthi Puja is done in the later part of the evening after the Moon is visible. Lord Ganesha is worshipped with flowers, incense sticks, Durva grass and amidst chanting of Mantra. Sweets (preferably Modak) or naivedya are offered to the idol of Lord Ganesha and then after the Puja, it is distributed among all as Prasad.
On this day, the Moon is also worshipped. After Lord Ganesha’s puja, devotees offer their prayers to Moon with Chandan (sandalwood), Water, Rice and Flowers. After completion of this Puja only can the fast be broken.
