International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking: A Road to Recovery

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed on 26 June every year with an aim to raise awareness against illegal drug abuse and trafficking. This day was first announced and recognized by the UN General Assembly in 1987. As per United Nations statistics, there are 230 million people worldwide who are using drugs. The UN World Drug report 2007, mentioned that drugs worth around 322 billion US$ are exchanged all over the world every year.

Going by the success of the previous year, the theme for 2018 is

“Listen First – Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and be safe.”

‘Listen First’ is an activity to build support for a version of drug usage by showing a keen interest in the prosperity of youngsters and youth by their families and their communities. Listening to kids and youth is the initial step to help them with the goal that will make them stay away from drugs and ensure their health.

Drug abuse is the most serious area of concern amongst youngsters and causes a lot of health issues. There are many side effects of the same as well, for example, monetary loss, bad conduct, such as violence, stealing, and wrongdoing other than social disgrace and the overall downfall of the society.

Drug racket works globally. India, potentially as a result of its area is a prominent place for drug activity including drug trafficking and nearby consumption. The Government of India passed a law in 1988 to avoid Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances as a measure to check the drug pull. However, it did not succeed and drug threat has increased. In Punjab, around 75% of youth are addicted to one or the other drugs. As per the report, drug consumption has increased in the metro cities alongside liquor use among youth. The impact of Westernization, changing the family structure, a pressure of studies, and an overall stressful life are some of the reasons behind such rise in drug abuse and consumption.

How is Health Affected by Drug Abuse?

  1.     Physical Aspect

A person is addicted to drugs suffers from ‘withdrawal symptoms’ when they are running down on drugs. Heroin or hypnotic drugs can cause sleepiness nights and also cause breathing problems. Cocaine can cause rapid heartbeats and hash or weed can numb you frequently.

  1.  Psychological Problems and Mental Problems

Drugs will create wild mood swings, depression and anxiety. It also causes loss of interest in the daily work routine. Mental complications are hallucinations and confusions.

A drug addict becomes anti-social and resorts to crimes such as stealing, violence, cheating or even terrorism.

Most parts of the world have several support groups and organization services available. There are many drug rehabilitation centers are there to cure one of the problems of drug addiction.
